Well they say it never rains but it pours (that’s certainly been the case this summer so far) and that’s definitely true for blog tours as I’ve got my second review of the day today. This time it is the latest from Ruth Ware. Her new novel One Perfect Couple, has been described as ‘And Then There Were None meets The Traitors’ which is a perfect description.
One Perfect Couple sees research scientist Lyla being persuaded by her boyfriend Nico that the best way for him to get his big break is for the pair of them to join the cast of a new reality show being filmed on a desert island. The aim of the show is that the last couple standing on the island win the game (and the publicity that goes with it) However when a tropical storm hits and the island and it’s inhabitants gets cut off from civilisation, the group soon have to band together as supplies dwindle along with their hope of being rescued.
This was an absolutely superb story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The story is mainly told from Lyla’s viewpoint, intermingled with diary entries from an unknown person which helps give the book an extra sense of intrigue. I really liked the character of Lyla, despite her rather odd taste in men. She instantly takes the role of the responsible one which is in stark contrast to her feckless boyfriend. There was also an interesting cast of other characters who all play their own roles in creating a multi faceted plot that kept up the pace to the end.
I like the concept of locked room mysteries and this definitely had that kind of feel. The island that started off so idyllic soon becomes a nightmare as the fear and claustrophobia increases. You can feel the tension coming off the page and the quality of the writing really brings it all to life.
This was a perfect summer read that will keep you gripped to the end, and hopefully keep the sunshine out at least inside if not out!
