So admitedly from the cover the doesn’t look like my usual type of book. However when I was invited to review what was described as a political thriller I thought I’d give it a go.
Coming Clean starts when Veselina arrives in England having left behind tragedy in Bulgaria, against the wishes of her family. Too proud to admit her mistake when her dream turns sour, she takes work as a maid for politician Gerard Fosh, tipped to be the next Prime Minister, and his wife Alison, also an MP with secret desires of her own. Soon Veselina suspects Gerard of a relationship with his ambitious political aide that could ruin his reputation and his career. As she comes under pressure to uncover the truth, Veselina has to make a decision that could be life changing.
Coming Clean was a nice easy and entertaining read that I enjoyed. It was very much a character led novel with all the characters being multi-dimensional. The novel was told from the different viewpoints of Gerard, Alison and Veselina which gave the story a really interesting element as you saw the events unfolding through different eyes.
I enjoyed the character of Vaselina. It was an interesting insight into how difficult it must be to live up to your own moral standards when your whole life is dependent on keeping quiet and fading into the background. The other characters were a mixed bag. Whilst the idea of a lying politician who doesn’t care about the truth or his family is nothing unusual, this was a clever take on the story as both husband and wife are politicians with big career ambitions (although of course the wife is portrayed as kind and caring, whereas the husband is unpleasant and ruthless)
It was described as a political thriller which I have to say I’m not sure I’d agree with. In my head the term political thriller usually involves murder and/or spies which this didn’t have however this was definitely a political mystery. The political intrigue and mix of family drama was well written and the story itself was interesting.
This was a good read that I enjoyed. A big thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random’s Resources for inviting me to be part of this tour. Get your copy via amazon here
