I have read Charlotte’s previous novels so was pleased to be offered the chance to read and review her latest one A Deadly Inheritance which is out today.
A Deadly Inheritance introduces us to Detective Caius Beauchamp who has recently become a rich heir due to some weird ‘inheritance tetris’. He is called to what appears to be a botched burglary until he gets a tip off about the families rather less than squeaky clean background. Caius recognises the victim from a recent luxary train ride and starts to feel that everything is getting a bit too close for comfort. Alongside this, Caius is asked to investigate an ‘off the record’ case for a former boss and due to the circumstances he feels unable to say no.
This was an interesting read that I enjoyed. The writing is short and snappy which completely suited the character of Caius. Despite being an incredibly competent detective his change in circumstance has thrown him somewhat. He is trying to manage the juxtaposition of his new world of wealth and privilege with his own beliefs and knowledge and this gave a different spin to his character. I liked the interaction between Caius and his detective Team, and their jokey banter belies their focus and dogged determination to solve the crimes.
The story was interesting and I enjoyed the way that the seemingly disparate strands all merged into one intriguing story. There is a murder at the heart of the story, but it also deals with much more including far-right ideology and trad wife influencers, all in all a cast of rather unpleasant characters. However the story is told with a sense of humour that keeps it entertaining. Although this is the third in the series it could be read as a standalone however the characters will definitely make more sense if you have read the previous ones.
A must read for fans of witty crime novels with an intriguing cast of characters.
