I have read nearly all of Lisa Gardner’s previous novels so was pleased to be invited to take part in the blog tour for her latest book Kiss Her Goodbye.
Kiss Her Goodbye is the latest instalment of the Frankie Elkin series. Frankie spends her life searching for missing people. This time she is in Tucson, Arizona. Frankie has been asked to try and find Sabera, a young Afghan refugee who has disappeared leaving behind her daughter and husband. Frankie starts to investigate but the investigation is going to be anything but straightforward.
Kiss Her Goodbye was a remarkable book I thought. It was of course at it’s heart a mystery but interwoven with that was a really moving and frankly horrifying tale of refugees struggles. From their life in Afghanistan to the hardships they have to endure once in America, the story of Sabera and her family is definitely one that will stay with you long after you have finished reading.
I love the character of Frankie Elkin and especially enjoyed the comedic element brought in by her strange living arrangements (think extreme pet sitting) This book showed a slightly different side to Frankie as she contemplated people that she had left behind, and her family make up. Yet there was still that hard edge to her that we’ve seen in the previous books, and her dogged determination to stand up for those who can’t necessarily stand up for themselves.
The writing is as always with Lisa Gardner flawless and she manages to take what could be a very harrowing tale, and use her story telling to highlight the plight of many people around the world in a readable way. This is thought provoking but isn’t a preachy novel, it’s a fantastic story that I absolutely couldn’t put down.
It’s the 4th in the series but equally could be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved this novel, in fact my only criticism is that I would have like to have seen more of Petunia!
