Well that’s a wrap as they say. Book ten of the Lynda La Plante blog tour, and it has been an absolute blast.
Whole Life Sentence is the last in the series before Tennison becomes the Prime Suspect character that we all know. This time Jane has been promoted again, but it seems the higher up she goes, the more discrimination and harassment she faces. Having moved to AMIT she is given a office smelling of chip fat, an assistant who doesn’t really know what’s going on, and a cold case that is more frozen than cold. She is also then caught up in a case of suspicious suicide that a colleague is determined to take over from her. As she continues to investigate in her usual dogged style she soon realises that things are far from easy.
This was a superb end to the series that I absolutely sped through. Once again Jane is thrust into a world where men rule and any women entering are seen with distrust at best, and pure hatred at worst.
It was good to see that Jane continues to find herself a bit of a life outside of the police force. I have enjoyed how her family and friends have been used throughout the series to build her character and show us that there is more to her than just a hard working almost obsessive police officer. New man, new haircut does seem to be a yearly event for her!
The crimes themselves were as interesting as always. I loved the characterisation of those involved and it was interesting to see some of the story from the focus of the other characters. I found the book was a slower pace than some previously, but this suited the cold case element. Towards the end you could actually feel the frustration of Jane coming off the page as other officers took the credit for her work. I think the fact that you know from the outset that she becomes ‘Prime Suspect’ does give a bit of a different feel to the book, clearly things will work out for her up to a point, but that doesn’t detract from what is a great story.
I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this blog tour, and having the opportunity to read all of this series from the beginning. It was also super exciting to meet Lynda La Plante, tour organiser Tracey and other members of #teamtennison at the recent Capital Crime Festival in London. I will definitely be heading off to read Prime Suspect next!
