One of the great things about Capital Crime was the fact you get to not only see loads of authors and hear about lots of new books, you also get chances to win proofs, and I was one of the lucky ones who got to win a copy of the new novel by Adele Parks, Eyes On You.

Eyes On You begins with Amy. At 15 she witnessed her Father murdering his mistress, and her testimony was the reason he got sent to prison. Years later Amy is working in Oodles for Noodles (love that name) and Oil walks in. They instantly feel a connection. It seems at first like it’s love but it soon becomes clear that there are hidden secrets and it’s a fine line between love and obsession.
Eyes On You was a fantastic read that I read over one sunny weekend and really enjoyed. It was a tale of fractured family relationships and how the effects of one person’s crime can have profound and far reaching consequences for everyone in the vicinity.
The character of Amy is interesting. Despite the bravado and don’t care attitude she shows at the beginning of the story, this betrays a vulnerability that is very sad. Clearly witnessing your father murder someone will have a devasting effect. I also found Michelle, Amy’s Mum ,a difficult one to define. You would think any woman whose husband was in prison for the murder of someone they were having an affair with would want to put as much distance as possible between them but it felt very much as though she found it impossible to move on.
The dynamics between Oli and Amy were fascinating. On the one hand you knew that the relationship was not going to be plain sailing. Yet you couldn’t possibly guess just quite how complicated it would get.
The story was interesting and the ending was both completely unexpected and yet satisfyingly expected at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I must confess that I haven’t read many of Adele Park’s books before but if they are all as good as this one then I shall definitely be catching up on her back catalogue. A big thanks to Capital Crime and HQ Stories for the book.
